Sexism in the Media

Picture
The media usually stereotypes women as weak, fragile, and unintelligent. Teenage girls are always shown as ditzy and materialistic. Even in children's movies, a damsel in distress always need to be rescued by a man. Many advertisements show that women are supposed to be thin and beautiful instead of smart and independent. Even men's magazines have articles on how to trick a woman into sleeping with them. Women are usually used as sex symbols in the media. Most car advertisements will have a "sexy" woman standing next to the car to support the idea that "if you buy this car, you will get women like her". All of this stereotyping has a strong influence on young children. Many young girls feel pressure to be beautiful all the time and dependent on a man to "rescue her". Not very movies support the idea that women can be beautiful, intelligent, and independent all at the same time.
