Jessie Bernard

Jessie Bernard was a very well known female sociologist. She specialized in the family, sexuality, and gender. She wrote several books. Some of the best known one's are Academic Women (1964), The Future of Marriage (1972), and The Female World (1981). She was a liberal feminist who believed that being a housewife is what held women back from reaching their full potential. Bernard believed that men would benefit the most from marriage because they are more likely to have successful careers because their wife would take care of the house and children. Some feminists see marriage as a cruel institution because of how little it benefits women.
